Sugar Gliders at the Erie County Fair?

I have heard from quite a few sources that there is a breeder selling sugar gilders at the Erie County Fair. I am not sure if they are actually selling the gliders right on the grounds , but I am sure they selling them at some point to anyone who will pay the money. The truth of the matter is , is that people don't go to the fair to buy sugar gliders, so these are all impulse buys. Not thought through, planned or researched. What really infuriates me, is the information that these people are giving to the unsuspecting public. They are telling people that 1.) sugar gliders can be and like to be carried around all day long 2.) they don't smell 3.) they do better by themselves and bond to people better as a lone sugar glider 4.) do better in a smaller cage 5.) Don't need a vet 6.) only need some fruits and pellets for food 7.) are the greatest pets and do well with kids. All of this information is the furthest from the truth and very WRONG! I fear for all the sugar gliders that are now not being taken care of properly because people were misinformed. I also fear that these gliders will , in the future, not be wanted anymore because people thought they were something that they are not. I am not sure if this is true at all, but I was also told by a source that they are selling Marmosets at the fair as well. Marmosets are the smallest of the primate family and do not make good pets at all.
If you have any information regarding the sugar gliders or marmosets at the fair please e-mail me with what you encountered rachel@lifelongtails.org please let me know what you saw and what you were told. Or even if you saw the sugar gliders or marmosets while you were there. If you happened to have bought a sugar glider, please contact me, I would love to help you out by giving you proper care information. Thank you.

ive done a lot of research online, talked to actual owners, and pet shops. as far as the diet, i wouldn't take a chance feeding your sugar glider live mealworms... it was only one case, but the girl at the pet shop had owned one for six years, fed it basic food, only had one.... it was all fine. she decided to get live mealworms as a treat... she came back a couple hours later to find her glider half dead, took him to the vet, and it turned out the heads of the mealworms had been chewing on the inside of the stomach. there was nothing the vet could do at this point. but the fact is, she got it as a baby from a friend, never had any special instructions, fed it the regular kibble type food, and it was fine for 6 yrs until this freak occurrence.

Sorry. But Thousands of people feed their Sugar Gliders Mealworms on a daily basis, with no issues. It is almost impossible for this to happend and I dont even believe it. Sugars dont eat the mealsworms whole, they bite off in sections, so a live mealworm doesnt even enter their system. Sugars EAT BUGS in the WILD. Bugs of all different kinds. I just believe that this is a fairytale, or friend of a friend story, that she told as if it was her own. It is much more important that we feed our Sugars insects, which are part of its proper diet, then worrying about this stupid story.

Hi Steve,
I am sorry for not replying to your post right away. The mealworms eating at an animal from the inside , is a myth. Sugar gliders bite off portions off the mealworm, they do not eat them whole. Plus they seem to eat the insides and leave the "husks". Even so, and this is true for reptiles and all mealworm eating animals, once the mealworm hits the digestive acids in the stomach , believe me , it is DEAD at that point. There is no need to chop off the heads of the mealworms. Sugar gliders are natural insect eaters, they do need this source of portein as well as cooked chicken, eggs, etc. That baby sugar glider must have been very sickly if all he was eating was kibble, that is a very poor and unhealthy diet for gliders. I know many people would argue this and sware that is has happpened. But I know many vets and reptile rescue workers who will back the facts up and call it what it is- a myth. sugar gliders can eat mealworms without any ill consequences. That baby glider must have passed from a different reason.
